The Japan Society of Engineering Geology (JSEG) was established in 1958 and joined IAEG in 1974. Now, JSEG is composed of about 2000 members. JSEG aims to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and technology among researchers and professionals in engineering geology. And also aims to pursue interdisciplinary and comprehensive research, technological development, moreover, makes specific contributions to the advancement of science, technology, and culture.
Japan situates on global active zone and has 10% of the world’s major earthquakes and 7% of the world’s active volcanoes. Because of these factors, the ground has a complex geological structure that makes it fragile to disasters. In addition, recent climate change has increased the risk of disasters. The technologies of engineering geology developed in Japan for disaster risk reduction and sustainable development under these challenging conditions have the potential to benefit people all over the world.
JSEG also acts as the IAEG Japan National Group and it hosted the 10th Asian Regional Conference in 2015. Through this conference, JSEG provided opportunities to the academic researchers, engineers and engineering geologists to present and share the state-of-the-art views in the field of applied geology and Geohazard. And in 2027, we will host the 16th Asian Regional Conference in Japan. We expect more contributions of engineering geologists in the field of Geo-Disaster Risk Reduction.
